Cost of a Medical Degree: USA vs BULGARIA

Medical Practice generally is defined as the science and practice of making diagnosis, giving treatment, and preventing diseases. Today it is carried out by doctors, nurses, surgeons and physicians.

Although, being a Doctor is great but a lot of work goes into becoming one. The admission criteria for Medical schools are very rigorous, fees are relatively high and education is very intense. But after graduation, you can be rest assured that you will have the skills to help those in need, and make a real difference in people’s lives. That in itself is worth the hours of hard work. Let’s consider two countries where you can get a medical degree.

Cost of Studying Medicine in USA

Medicine in the United States of America is among the most expensive in the world. For example,  there is no financial aid available for international students, and you as  a prospective student must prove you have the capacity to provide around $25,000 per year.

Furthermore, most medical schools that accept international students are privately owned and their annual tuition fee ranges from around $40,000 – $60,000.

Tuition fees for public medical schools in USA can range between $35,000 -$50,000 per year.

However, asides that you must also consider the living expenses during your studies in the USA.

Inspite of all these,  if you can afford the high cost of medical school programs and living expenses, and you have a chance to get into USA medical school, after getting your medical degree from the USA, you will be able to practice almost anywhere.

Alternative to Studying Medicine in USA

Most medical schools in USA are extremely expensive and the admission is extremely challenging.  Some public medical schools in USA do not have seats for international medical students and the acceptance rate for USA resident students do not exceed 50%.

As alternative, most USA students and International students go for medical university schools abroad. Among most popular university schools abroad, there are medical university schools in East Europe (Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Check, Ukraine, and Russia etc.) that there feeesare reasonably cheap.

Cost of Studying Medicine in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a country with a longstanding tradition in the medical field and they produce top quality graduates. Medical students can choose to study in English, or Bulgarian, depending on the medical university offers.

Foreign citizens, coming from countries, that are not members of the European Union / European Economic Area (EU/EEA), are only enrolled for training in Bulgaria as self-paid students.

Medicine in Bulgaria has become one of the major subjects in Europe and beyond. Today Bulgarian doctors are well appreciated in countries all over the world and Bulgarian medical schools attract thousands of medical students from all over the world every year.

Most of international students attracted by English medical programs (General Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, etc.) are from UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Nigeria, South Africa, and India.

  • General Medicine: 6-year program, 7000 – 8000 € / year (depending on University);
  • Pharmacy: 5-year program 6000- 8000 €/ year;
  • Dentistry: 6-year program, 8000 € / year;
  • Nursing: 4-year program, 3000 €/ year;
  • Midwifery: 4-year program, 3000 €/ year;
  • Veterinary Medicine: 6-year program, 4000 to 4500 €/ year;

Tuition fees for medical study in Bulgaria may be paid in two settlements each year, at beginning of each semester. Tuition fees in Bulgaria are amongst the lowest in Europe and, combined with cheap living costs, make Bulgaria an excellent place to study medicine.
