Did you know that Jay Z has a scholarship for study abroad?

studyabroad

Jay Z’s foundation, the Shawn Carter Foundation, has teamed up with the Institute for International Education (IIE)/Gilman International Scholarship Program to expand the global experiences and leadership opportunities for underserved students through establishment of full study-abroad scholarships.

The scholarships are a part of the broader Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund (SCSF). According to the website, the fund “was founded on the belief that any motivated individual in need should have the opportunity to further his or her education. By removing some of the financial burdens associated with going to, surviving in, and graduating from college, the SCSF plays a vital role in increasing college access and success for many motivated yet underserved youth and young adults.”

“The SCSF provides individual grants, paid directly to the educational institution, to every student who qualifies and reapplies yearly, from admission to graduation. The grant can be used to cover tuition expenses and related supplemental educational expenses such as books, lab fees, travel and select costs of living. All Shawn Carter Scholars are required to “give back” by conducting community service and by serving as mentors to younger, aspiring Shawn Carter Scholars,” the fund’s website states.

To apply for the study abroad scholarship, Shawn Carter Scholars undergo a screening and selection process by IIE/Gilman and a short list of recommended students will be forwarded to Shawn Carter Foundation for final selection of awardees.

All students are required to complete a follow-on service project so that their study abroad experiences and insights are shared back with their home, school and communities, a necessary component of “giving back.”

NYLON is another cultural exchange program designed by the Shawn Carter Foundation and the University of the Arts London/London College of Communication.

“The aim is to increase the future employment prospects of underserved students by exposing them to a cross-cultural, academic, experiential, and professional development experience in creative industries. NYLON launched in 2015 and since then, their students have created marketing campaigns for Made in America Festival, the Shawn Carter Foundation, and developed a strategy to expand the NY-LON program itself,” the website states.
