There are almost 450 state-accredited universities with some 17,500 degree programmes in Germany. German universities offer degree programmes in every possible subject and academic level – be it bachelor’s, master’s, state examinations or doctoral degrees. General universities focus strongly on scientifically oriented study in a wide range of disciplines. Universities of applied science, on the other hand, are very practice-oriented. If you’re more interested in artistic subjects, you can enrol at a college of art, film or music
All university students are required to pay a “semester contribution”. It costs about 250 euros on average but can vary depending on the university and the services it includes. One part of the semester contribution covers social services and fees. This helps finance, for example, the student dining halls, student halls of residence, athletic facilities and administrative services. This social contribution can cost up to 100 euros.
In some states, students are charged an extra administrative fee which can range from 50 to 75 euros per semester. Regarding tuition fees, German universities charge very low, and often none. Most universities in Germany are state subsidized. Students do not normally pay tuition fees for bachelor’s degree programs.
The cost of living in Germany is quite reasonable, especially compared to other Europeans countries. The prices for food, accommodation, clothing, cultural events, etc. are basically in line with the EU average. Students will need around 800 euros a month to cover your living expenses in Germany. The largest expense is your monthly rent. In large cities, costs can vary considerably depending on where you live.

greatly. Depending on where your university is located, you will pay between 210 and 360 euros per month for an accommodation. The rental prices in some large cities, such as Cologne, Munich, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt and Main, are much higher in comparison.
If you are looking to live cheaply, it might be a good idea to take a room in a student hall of
residence or a shared flat. Types of accommodation in residential housing:
- Single room on one floor: Several rooms on one floor sharing the
kitchen, shower and WC. - Single room in a flat share / community: Self-contained housing with between two and seven single rooms, mostly with shared kitchen, bath/shower and WC.
- Apartments: Single or double apartments are available. A single apartment is a self-contained unit comprising one room with kitchenette, bathroom and WC. Double apartments with two rooms are usually rented to student couples.
- Guest houses / student hotels: Some Student have guest houses or student hotels. It’s common that accommodation in Germany also have communal rooms such as cafés, laundry facilities and cellars for bicycles.

For students who don’t come from the EU or EEA countries, work while studying is restricted; you may work 120 full days or 240 half days per year. Some exceptions for the working permit may apply if you take a job as a student assistant or research assistant at the university, in this case, it’s usually no problem to exceed the 120-day limit. However, you are obliged to inform the Alien Registration Office if you do.
Many students take a job at the institute, library or other facilities at their university.
How much you earn in a part-time job largely depends on your responsibilities, the region where you are working and the industry the job belongs to. The salary ranges from 6 to 10 euros per hour. Keep in mind that your chances of finding a job will increase significantly if you know how to speak German.
