The Careers and Skills of the future

A leap into the future reveals to a certain degree that some certain jobs may cease to exist, some jobs would evolve and some will remain relevant. In what category does your job fall into?

With the 4th Industrial Revolution, ‘The Internet of Things’, currently in full-swing, it’s no surprise that organizations are looking forward to integrate technology with healthier business practices. These technologies range from artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, environmental change, and global connectedness.

Nobody can fully predict the future or what needs the economy and society may have in 10 years’ time, so while you may not be able to know for certain what your career in 2030 is going to look like, what you can do right now is prepare for the career paths of tomorrow.

Are you building the right skills for the jobs of the future?

Automation is transforming the way of work. This pace of change means that employers need to take a proactive role in ensuring they have a workforce equipped with the skills of the future.

To accomplish this, you as an employee need to understand the skills that will make you remain innovative and competitive. Then, you need to understand how to best prepare for the future.

In this post, we’ll share the top in demand skills of the future, and you can fuse technology the way you work.

Soft Skills of the future

According to the World Economic Forum, the top soft skills you need to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution have shifted in the last several years, prioritizing complex problem solving, critical thinking and creativity as the top three skills and adding emotional intelligence to the list.

The following skills are listed as the most in demand for employers by 2020:

  • Complex problem solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Creativity
  • People management
  • Coordinating with others
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Judgment and decision making
  • Service orientation
  • Negotiation
  • Cognitive flexibility

This list reflects the fact that robots can complete many tasks faster than humans, but the machines still lack creativity and emotional skills. As technology takes on more of the workload, the most in-demand employees will be those who possess the skills that computers cannot replicate. However, the need also increases for workers who have the skills to use, build and innovate the technology of the future.

Hard Skills of the future

According to LinkedIn, the skills on this list reflect the impact of our increasingly digital world. Yes, that means a spike in cloud computing and AI, but it also means a spike in improving that digital experience (i.e. UX Design, web development, etc.).

Digital is also giving new uses for skills – for example, there’s increased demand for audio production. This was a skill formerly needed for radio production; today, it’s used for producing podcasts and digital ads.

Here are the hard skills companies need most in 2019, according to LinkedIn data:

  • Cloud Computing
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Cyber Security
  • Analytical Reasoning
  • UX Design
  • Data Science
  • Mobile Application Development
  • Social Media Marketing
  • Business Analysis
  • Cinematography and Animation
  • Sales Leadership
  • Translation
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Scientific Computing
  • Game Development
  • Journalism
  • Digital Marketing
  • Industrial Design
  • Competitive Strategies
  • Customer Service Systems
  • Software Testing
  • Computer Graphics
  • Corporate Communications
